At the 2006 census, Moonta had a population of 3,350. There are several distinct localities or hamlets surrounding Moonta, including Moonta Mines, Yelta, North Yelta, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Simms Cove.

Fishing: Moonta Bay and Port Hughes are famous for exceptional catches of King George Whiting and Snapper. Many other species such as Blue Swimmer Crab, Squid, Garfish, Snook and Australian Herring (Tommy Ruff) are available in large numbers in local waters, including both the Moonta Bay and Port Hughes Jetties.

The best beaches in South Australia: Simms Cove Beach, directly in front of Sandcastles, is a safe, clean swimming beach perfect for families.
